Miyagi Kan Karate-Do - Whangarei
The Miyagi Kan Karate Club was founded by 6th Dan Renshi Shihan Craig Nordstrand, in Whangarei New Zealand February 1996. Currently the club operates out of 79 Walton Street, Whangarei.
The Club is affiliated with Miyagi Kan Karate Club Sydney Australia run by 9th Dan Hanshi Shihan George Barounis. The club is also affiliated to IKO (International Karate Organisation) in Japan headed by 10th Dan Hanshi Shihan Gonnohyoe Yamamoto. Hanshi Barounis regularly comes to NZ to help with further improvement to the club.
The Miyagi Kan Karate Club is the first club in the Oceania Region to have a World Champion in Kumite in over 25yrs. Miyagi Kan Karate Club may not be the biggest Karate club in Northland, but they are definitely the strongest. Since the club started in 1996 they have produced the most NZ National Champions to come out of Northland, and more than double the amount of NZ representatives.
The Club has also produced countless Australian Open Champions and numerous Oceania Champions. With players ranked in the top 20 of the world in kumite(fighting), Miyagi Kan Karate Club is the club to take you to the Olympics and World Championships.
We cater for all ages from 4yrs and older, with separate classes for different grades and ages. The club focuses on Traditional Goju Ryu Karate as taught by Higoanna who taught Chojun Miyagi. The club focuses on kihon training, which is a very important part of Karate, and when taught well, the students excel in their Sport Karate and their Schooling.
