The 17th Oceania Karate Championships was held in Noumea, New Caledonia from 16th-18th September 2016 at the Arène du Sud.

We are very proud of our competitors who performed and behaved as befitting a National Karate team. In the medal tally New Zealand tied with Australia in Gold medals, but we were pipped to the post with less Silver medals.

For about half the team, it was their first experience of international competition with many rising to the occasion by winning a medal placing in their division - a total of 100 medals from 84 NZ competitors.

The National and Assistant Coaches were tireless in their efforts to bring out the best in our players during the training sessions and throughout the 3-day championships.

Our congratulations extend to our KNZ Referees who passed their Oceania Referees Examination.

We very much appreciate the parents for their support in getting the team to Noumea and cheering on all our competitors as one big Karate family.

Thank you to President Nicolas Vignoles and New Caledonia Karate Federation for their efforts and kind hospitality. The Kiwis have amazing memories of their stay in such a beautiful country, as well as their participation at the well-run organisation at these Oceania Karate Federation Championships headed by Christine Panné.

In 2017 the Senior-Only Oceania Championships will be held after the Australian Karate Open for attaining points towards Olympic qualification in Tokyo 2020. This event will take place annually.

On behalf of Karate New Zealand, we look forward to hosting the 18th Oceania Karate Championships in Auckland. See you all there!
