Holly trains at Shotokan Shitoryu Karate Association New Zealand in Auckland.
Every story is unique, this is her story:
“I followed my big sister Chloe into training at the age of five. Sensei Chris, my coach at the time, said you have to be six to start but allowed me to start anyway.
Losing my coach from my home town, Wanaka, was one the hardest obstacles I’ve faced in life. Losing the person who was your biggest support and taught me everything karate is, from the age of 5 was hard. It took me a year of not stepping foot on a mat. At nationals that year I went in support for my club, I decided to compete after not training for a year and I won both kata and kumite golds.
Karate has taught me to be resilient, dedicated, tactical, determined, compassionate and strong - mentally and physically. When I’ve lost or been told I won’t be good enough, my self-belief and strength as a person knowing I am good enough is what always gets me through.
Losing on the mat is hard but every loss is a learning curve. The only time you lose is if you take nothing away from the experience. It took time to be able to do this as losing hurts when you put your whole life into training.
At the end of the day, the things that hurt us make us stronger and better ourselves. Love and enjoy what you do because it’s all that matters.” - @hol_myfight
